How do pedestrians and cyclists experience particular characteristics of their walking and cycling environments and which of these do they prefer? We employ a novel 3D immersive simulation technology to gather information in the Netherlands and in Brazil on different walking and cycling environments and user preferences.
The cities in the Netherlands and São Paulo show large difference in quality, quantity and use of walking and cycling infrastructures. A comparison of preferences of various walking and cycling environments by applying virtual reality simulations could reveal the importance of local contexts and cultural differences. The results could be used by local policymakers, planners or different local interest groups. This theme is led by Prof. Dr. Martin Dijst, Prof. Dr. Dick Ettema and Dr. Nico Dogterom

Virtual Reality
“Rift is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. Whether you’re stepping into your favorite game, watching an immersive VR movie, jumping to a destination on the other side of the world, or just spending time with friends in VR, you’ll feel like you’re really there. Rift’s advanced display technology combined with its precise, low-latency constellation tracking system enables the sensation of presence – the feeling as though you’re actually there. The magic of presence changes everything. You’ve never experienced immersion like this.” https://www.oculus.com/en-us/rift/
